IMPORTANT DECK SUPPORT FOUNDATION RULES

DFLeavitt

Below are the 2012 IRC guidelines for deck support foundations. You might wonder why this is so important. Can a Northern Utah deck that is only 36” high have non-secured set atop the earth concrete bases? Do decks require concrete footings? If so, then how deep do they have to be? What is the smallest size wooden post you can use?

There are so many questions. Some of these are answered by the IRC, and others are answered by your AHJ (Authority having Jurisdiction).

The 2012 IRC deck lateral movement securement citations below include the IRC commentary...

MINIMUM COLUM SIZE - Wood 4”x4” - Steel 3”x3”

R407-3A

R407-3B

NOTE: The majority of our Northern Utah area is rated in seismic zone D and some E. This means that there is no exemption for the bottom end lateral movement securement of deck columns. The under 48” column height exception above does NOT apply.
